We subsequently added the web browser and movie downloader plug ins and it now acts as a portable computer for him along (despite being the size of a car GPS)with being an excellent music player. I bought this as a Christmas present for my teen aged son. One note, the screen quality is far better than expected, much better than typical of small PDA's.
this product faild in one month and we are having a hard time getting a RMA # so we can send it in for repairs.
I will NEVER purchase another Archos piece of junk again. A word of advice to anyone still foolish enough to ignore the negative feedback.make sure you carry a paper clip with you everywhere as part of the accessory kit.you will need it for all the constant resets. Life is too short. I have at least heeded the advice about Archos's call center and I have not bothered to call or send it back. It is the MOST temperamental gadget I have EVER had the misfortune of owning or using. I wish I had taken heed of the negative reviews.but being stubborn and stupid might I add, I ignored them all the went ahead and poured my money down the drain buying this piece of electronic junk. It freezes for no apparent reason other than a freeze is overdue since the last one about 15 mins ago. A lesson has been learnt though.
If you save.avi files, MP3 files, etc, you can browse and play them through your Archos on the TV. DVR Dock makes it bearable to use internet, and makes it easier to browse.You drop it, you have probably killed it. I have close to 200 hours of video on my 605 even though the files are not DVD quality they look excellent. (From experience, it is most convenient to get a hard drive that does not need its own AC power supply). DVR Dock, or if you are on a budget get the travel dock, cant record shows or use a remote, but it works. Archos Mini Dock for 405, 605, and 705 Players You can find a non-Archos Car Charger, and they make a battery dock.Interface sucks, I just do not use it for internet, or much else.
Yes, but when you drift to trying to multi task the limitations become obvious.Makes DVDs look slow, bulky and cumbersome. I never run out of stuff to watch.Get the DVR Dock. I don't keep music on it. It is strictly my video player. I was back on amazon because it is full and I was just looking at an upgrade to one of the Media Tablets in 500gb size range.I have been happier with this purchase than any other electronics purchase I have ever made. cons,Versatile. When you hold the Archos in your hand it is clear that it was not made to take a lot of abuse. Even if the resolution is awesome and clear.
I am travelling around frequently and instead of having to decide which DVDs I want to take for a week long trip and then have to lug around boxes, I used a program to rip my DVDs to an.avi file and place them all on my 605. I watch full length movies this way with no drop in quality from the ones on the Archos. If you have digital cable or satellite that uses the Red Yellow White, or s video outputs it serves as a pass through and you can Record TV to the device (I have not tried this as I have DISH DVR, read on). If you just want it for the video, you aren't making a bad choice.Limitless storage space w/external drives. You can get a cheap MP3 player for a little and use that to tote your music.Pros vs. I do not use it for music, instead I have a very extensive movie collection and several TV Show Seasons I like on DVD. Archos DVR Station Gen 5 for 405, 605, and 705 Players It allows you to unlock the full potential of the 605. It does take it a second longer to load the files on the external Drive, but no lag in playback.All in all I love this product and without hesitation would buy it again, but there are a few drawbacks that I will list bellow and explain some of the ways around.Battery Life sucks, but who really wants to watch a movie on a 4.3 inch screen.

If you have DISH Network with the HD DVR you can download a free add on that allows you to transfer recordings off of your DVR to your Archos.Another key feature of the DVR Dock is that it allows you to use a remote to operate and browse on your Archos, and if you run out of room as I have, the DVR Dock has a USB input that allows you to attach a portable hard drive. How I avoid the problem, handle with care and get a good case, preferably one you can zip and has padding.The thing is a brick, no way around that.
And i still havent seen a credit to my credit card thank god i used amex.they took it off for investigation i had to beg for a shipping label to send it back to.what shouldi have paid for that too. Got this item shipped just in time for xmas and when my son opened it it was broken, then the guy wanted ME to contact the manufactor cause he had no more in stock.no thanks. I rate this sales guy ooooooo
